Shipping container scheme launched at Shepherd’s Bush Market to provide space for biotech start-ups

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has joined forces with Open Cell, U+I and SynbiCITE to provide low cost space for biotech start-ups in shipping containers located at the Old Laundry Yard in Shepherd’s Bush Market.

Phase one of the scheme will be comprised of 20 containers that will provide fledgling companies the opportunity and space to carry out vital research.

Co-founder of Open Cell Helen Steiner came up with the idea of creating low-cost workspace solutions for biotech companies while working for Microsoft Research and lecturing at the Royal College of Art. Speaking about the new Shepherd’s Bush scheme, she says: “There is little or no infrastructure available to help talented scientists, designers and early stage biotech businesses to take their concepts to the next stage… Open Cell is a meeting place for anyone in the sciences or design disciplines to contribute to the burgeoning biotech sector in London. We are delighted U+I embraces our vision and is providing space for our first hub.”
