Both the London Mayor Boris Johnson and the Communities secretary Eric Pickles have backed the plans which have been submitted for the redevelopment of the Ram Brewery in Wandsworth. The scheme was originally approved by the council’s planning committee in July.

The redevelopment of the Ram Brewery will provide 661 new homes as well as 11,000 square meters of commercial space in the form of office space, retail space, cafes, as well as bars and restaurants.

Currently this Town Centre is vacant and under utlised, with the scheme given the go ahead we expect to see this as a catalyst to change in the area. The historic buildings of Ram Brewery will be restored and converted to as a new micro-brewery and brewing museum open to the public. The site will see public squares introduced as well as footpaths that will lead to and around heritage buildings.

The developers will be required to pay around £16.5m in community infrastructure levy (CIL). There are a number of possibilities to what this could go towards, one suggestion being the redesign of the Wandsworth one way system, which could help to cut the local congestion by diverting traffic away from the main town centre. 

Regeneration schemes such as this assist in providing much needed boosts to local communities, as well help to alleviate the lack of supply in the commercial and residential sectors. In the past years we have seen the northern and eastern fringes redeveloped to provide properties especially in the commercial sector. We are now looking at the south western fringes jumping on this bandwagon to provide much needed square footage.
