The large property developers, British Land are in the process of proposing a large multi-million pound design that propositions a tall 244m building, which is 20m taller than the new neighbouring Leadenhall Building, also deemed as the Cheesegrater in EC3, City. This is also being developed by British Land in conjunction with Oxford Properties – the design illustrates that it will take a tall, slender form. 

Buildings in the City are often nicknamed in relation to their form; there is the Cheesegrater, Can of Ham and the infamous Gherkin. With these kind of depictions the mayor of London, Boris Johnson has remarked that London is now starting to resemble “The Ploughman’s Lunch”. The new plans British Land have unveiled which has a unique photovoltaic ‘crust’, has already been labelled as “the slice of bread” but Flora Spoil, an architectural critic, really supporting “The Ploughman’s Lunch” comment from the mayor. 

As said by the chief executive at British Land, Chris Grigg, the site is perfect for their proposal, right in between their own Cheesegrater and Gherkin and then also close proposed ‘Toast Rack’ on Leadenhall Street. 

The building has been designed to complement the current buildings in the area and so far seems to be receiving welcoming feedback by critics.
