Proposed London skyscraper the Tulip has been recommended for approval ahead of a planning committee meeting on 2 April.
Plans for the somewhat controversial 1000 ft tower include restaurants and viewing galleries as well as a 40,000 sq ft educational facility. Supporters of the development claim that it will be “a new iconic building” that will bring new business and tourism into the area and help to establish London as a 24/7 city.
Not all feedback has been positive, however, and the plans have received some objections. London borough Tower Hamlets has argued that: “The proposed development would cause serious unacceptable (less than substantial) harm to the significance and setting of the Grade I listed Tower of London World Heritage, without significant and proportionate public benefit to justify such harm.”
And the building has been criticised as “a gimmick that would become an embarrassing blot on the horizon.”
If planning consent is granted by the committee, London mayor Sadiq Khan will be given two weeks to decide whether the venture should go ahead.
