The infamous BBC Television Centre known as The Doughnut, in White City, is about to go through a £200-million development, which will introduce a new hotel, as well as residential and office space into the area. It will also provide access for the public into the forecourt. This development will still maintain a significant BBC presence as three studios will be refitted, allowing programmes to continue. The office space within the 14 acres will primarily be used for the BBC’s commercial division and BBC Worldwide. 

The plan to regenerate the area is thought to make the most of the site and will include the introduction of new facilities such as a gym, cinema and restaurants. This will amount to a whole new source of employment in the area, increasing its attraction in terms of living and working. 

The BBC Television Centre is situated on the other side of Hammersmith Park from Westfield Shopping Centre and about a mile north of Shepherd’s Bush. As a result little business has been drawn to the area resulting in there having been until now few offices in White City.

The transformation of the BBC site could see this change. The new development scheme is designed to attract both residents and businesses; the latter will benefit from offices with new facilities and a historical location. 

The BBC has wanted to sell The Doughnut in the past, but this new development has managed to protect the site and its history whilst preserving the Grade II listed buildings. The aim is to prevent the area from losing its heritage and this proposal has the potential to allow another area within Hammersmith to contribute to vital job opportunities and may lead to further office space development.
