The First Day of Spring, as defined by the vernal equinox, was 20th March. However, after one of the longest coldest winters on record most of us would consider Sunday 14th April, almost a month later as being the First Spring Day. It is known that warmth and sunlight as well as causing nature to burst forth in growth and bloom also gives us humans a feeling of well-being and optimism encouraging us once again to get up and go. Who knows this better than residential agents who rightly anticipate a remarkable increase in viewings with the advent of spring sunshine.
What’s more the Chancellor, George Osborne, had a spring in his step in delivering his budget designed to kick start some growth in the Economy where measures included raising the income tax threshold, cutting fuel tax and launching “The Help to Buy” scheme to stimulate the house building market by Government backed mortgages aimed to help buyers of new build residential. High Street sales are already on the up despite the early and bitterly cold Easter. Helen Dickinson, Director General of The British Retail Consortium said that “2013 had got off to an encouraging start for the market. Getting a bit of sunshine, at long last, might help that along.”
But as the old adage goes one swallow doesn’t make a summer. Economic forecasts for 2013 from The CBI and British Chamber of Commerce remain cautious although both see improvement. But maybe reminders of Margaret Thatcher’s initiatives in the 1980’s to drive economic growth may trigger a new wave of confidence in UK PLC.
