The run of UK good news continued yesterday with the announcement of the baby son born to Prince William and his wife Kate. Following last year’s Olympic Games, Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and recent British sporting triumphs in tennis, rugby, cricket and cycling, the news of the royal birth promises that the general feeling of positivity in the UK is not set to end just yet. 

The baby was born in Paddington, in the same hospital, St Mary’s, in which Princes William and Harry were delivered. The staff working in offices in Paddington yesterday were no doubt hoping for a glimpse of the all-important envelope as it left the hospital, with its secret announcement of the gender of the baby – and it’s remarkable that the news did not leak into the world of Twitter before protocol was carried out. 

In fact, giving birth in a hospital is something relatively new for the royal family. The Queen was born at a property owned by her parents in Mayfair, while Charles was born at Buckingham Palace and Princess Anne at Clarence House. 

For the future king and his wife, St Mary’s offered the best of both worlds – NHS excellence in case of emergency; and a private Lindo wing which looks out over South Wharf Road and which allows for privacy, with facilities for the new father to stay the first night with Kate and the new baby. And despite the availability of chef-prepared meals on the ward, it is believed that the pizzas seen being taken to the hospital last night by security officers were destined for the royal couple. 

It is likely that crowds both local and tourist will throng the streets of London again once a name is announced and the baby makes his first journey through the capital.
